FAQ

  • Do I have to be in good shape before I start?
    No, you will get into shape as you train. We have a series of exercises that you will learn as you progress through the ranking system which will enable you to perform the self defense techniques.
  • Do I need special equipment to start Karate?
    No. To start with, come for a free trial lesson in your track pants or shorts. Once you decide to enrole, a simple training gi and a pair of protective gloves will suffice. When you achieve higher grades or begin to compete, you may look into more specialised apparel and equipment.
  • I am 31 years old, am I too old to start martial arts?"
    No, you are not too old to begin martial arts training. Karate regularly has students who start training that are between adolecense, through the 50's and older. Karate is a practical and effective martial art that does not incorporate gymnastics.
  • I am very busy with my work schedule, how much time do I need to devote to karate classes?"
    The two 1 hour classes a week are recommended, as is practicing at home. As you progress through the ranks, you may want more 1:1 attention. We offer private lessons and advanced classes for higher ranked students, which can further help hone your skills.
  • How long does it take to get a black belt?
    In Shotokan Karate, it takes approximately 5 years to reach student black belt.
  • What sort of things should I consider when choosing a school?
    Firstly, is your dojo part of a legitimately recognised organisation. Shugoki Karate Academy is affiliated to SKIF, through our membership to SKIA. This ensures our traditions, lineage and gradings have true Japanese recognition. Secondly, but most importantly, is the instructor. Your ideal Sensei is someone with whom you will be able to form a close student/teacher relationship. They should be knowledgeable, passionate for their craft and show the type of dedication you would need to achieve your goals.
